The road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup was the longest and most open in the tournament's history. With the finals expanded to 48 teams, every continent received more places than ever before, giving dozens of nations a realistic chance of reaching World Cup 2026. Qualifying began on October 12, 2023, when the Asian confederation played its first matches and Japan became the first country to book its place in March 2025.

Three of the 48 spots were taken by the hosts. The United States, Canada and Mexico qualified automatically as co-hosts and did not count against CONCACAF's regular allocation, leaving 45 places to be decided on the pitch across the six confederations and the intercontinental play-offs.
