Yann Sommer is not ready to retire from professional football. After bringing his successful spell at Inter Milan to an end, the experienced Swiss goalkeeper has accepted a new challenge that will allow him to remain at the highest level and compete in the Champions League.

Sommer agrees move after leaving Inter Milan

Yann Sommer is set to join Club Brugge on a free transfer. The 37-year-old has reached an agreement with the Belgian champions and is expected to sign a short-term contract once he completes his medical examinations and the remaining formalities.

The goalkeeper became available after his contract with Inter Milan expired at the end of June. The Italian club decided not to extend the agreement, meaning Club Brugge will not be required to pay a transfer fee to secure his services.

According to reports from Sacha Tavolieri and Fabrizio Romano, Sommer received several offers following his departure from Italy. He was also presented with an attractive proposal from Spain, but ultimately opted for a move to Belgium. The sporting project, the opportunity to remain a first-choice goalkeeper and the prospect of playing in the Champions League reportedly played a major role in his decision.

Experienced goalkeeper to replace Simon Mignolet

Sommer is expected to become Club Brugge’s new number one following the retirement of Simon Mignolet. The former Liverpool goalkeeper ended his professional career after the 2025/26 season, leaving the Belgian side searching for an experienced replacement.

The Swiss international appears well suited to the role. During his long career, he has represented FC Basel, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. He has also accumulated extensive experience in European competitions and spent many years as Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper.

His arrival should provide Club Brugge with immediate stability and leadership. Sommer is accustomed to competing under pressure, challenging for domestic trophies and performing in major Champions League fixtures.

The goalkeeper leaves Inter after three productive seasons at San Siro. He made 139 appearances for the Nerazzurri and recorded 66 clean sheets. During that period, he helped the club win two Serie A titles, as well as the Coppa Italia and the Italian Super Cup.

The move therefore represents a calculated decision for both sides. Club Brugge acquire a proven goalkeeper without paying a transfer fee, while Sommer secures regular football and another opportunity to compete in Europe’s leading club competition.
