Uruguay's World Cup campaign continues to drift off course. Marcelo Bielsa's side followed up their draw against Saudi Arabia with another disappointing result, this time being held to a 2-2 draw by Cape Verde.

The South American giants appeared on course for victory after recovering from an early setback, but costly mistakes from veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera allowed the underdogs to snatch a valuable point.

Cape Verde Punish Early Mistake

Uruguay entered the match knowing that anything less than a win would leave them under serious pressure heading into the final round of group fixtures.

Instead, it was Cape Verde who made the brighter start.

The opening goal arrived in unusual fashion when a long-range free kick from around 40 meters caught both the defensive wall and Muslera off guard. The experienced goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing it to find the net and hand the African side a surprise lead.

It was another reminder that Cape Verde are proving far more competitive than many expected before the tournament.

Araujo Leads Uruguay's Fightback

Despite the difficult start, Uruguay responded well and completely changed the momentum before halftime.

Maximiliano Araujo brought his side level after reacting quickest inside the penalty area during a chaotic sequence in front of goal.

The winger then turned provider for Uruguay's second. Manuel Ugarte delivered an excellent cross, Araujo flicked the ball on, and Agustin Canobbio finished the move to complete the comeback.

At 2-1, Uruguay seemed to have weathered the storm and looked set to collect their first victory of the tournament.

Muslera's Second Error Changes Everything

The second half initially followed a predictable pattern, with Uruguay controlling possession and searching for a third goal.

Instead, disaster struck once again.

A misplaced pass from Mathias Oliveira created the initial danger, but the decisive mistake came from Muslera. The goalkeeper rushed out of his area unnecessarily, leaving his goal exposed.

Helio Varela needed no second invitation. The Cape Verde forward intercepted the loose ball and calmly rolled it into the empty net to make it 2-2.

The equalizer transformed the closing stages, with Cape Verde suddenly believing an even bigger upset was possible.

Spain Take Command of the Group

Earlier in the day, Spain produced one of the most dominant performances of the tournament, defeating Saudi Arabia 4-0.

Mikel Oyarzabal starred with two goals and an assist, while Lamine Yamal also found the net. Spain's fourth goal came courtesy of a Saudi own goal as the European champions cruised to victory.

The result moved Spain to the top of the group ahead of the decisive final round of matches.

Final Matchday Set for Drama

Uruguay now face a difficult situation heading into their final group game against Spain. What was expected to be a relatively straightforward path to qualification has suddenly become far more complicated.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde continue to be one of the surprise packages of the tournament. After already frustrating Spain earlier in the competition, they have now taken points from Uruguay as well and remain firmly in the race for a place in the knockout stage.

The battle for qualification in Group H is wide open.
