The United States booked its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a composed 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The hosts overcame the final half-hour with only ten men after Folarin Balogun was sent off, yet still finished the stronger side and comfortably secured progression.
USA Took Control Before Halftime
Having topped their group with convincing wins over Paraguay and Australia, Mauricio Pochettino's team entered the knockout stage full of confidence.
Bosnia, meanwhile, arrived after an impressive tournament that included eliminating Italy in the play-offs before advancing from a difficult group as one of the best third-placed teams.
From the opening whistle, the Americans dictated possession and created the better chances. Balogun was denied early, while goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj produced several important saves to keep Bosnia in the contest.
The striker thought he had broken the deadlock midway through the first half, only for VAR to rule the effort offside.
He didn't have to wait long for another opportunity.
Just before the interval, a defensive lapse gifted Balogun another chance, and this time he made no mistake, putting the United States ahead. Moments later he nearly doubled the lead, rattling the crossbar before halftime.
Red Card Changed the Match – But Not the Result
The game took an unexpected turn shortly after the hour mark.
Following a lengthy VAR review, Balogun was shown a straight red card for a dangerous challenge, forcing the United States to play the final 30 minutes a man down.
That should have handed Bosnia the initiative.
Instead, the Americans remained organised, defended confidently and never allowed their opponents to build sustained pressure. Bosnia enjoyed the extra possession but struggled to create clear opportunities, with the US back line rarely looking troubled.
Tillman Seals It
Any hopes of a late Bosnian comeback disappeared eight minutes from time.
Malik Tillman curled a superb free-kick beyond Vasilj to make it 2-0, effectively ending the contest despite the numerical disadvantage.

Bosnia continued to push forward until the final whistle, but Matt Freese completed the job with a clean sheet as the Americans comfortably protected their lead.
The United States now advances to face Belgium in the Round of 16 after the Red Devils produced an astonishing comeback against Senegal.
One concern remains for Mauricio Pochettino, however. Balogun will miss the clash through suspension, forcing the US coach to reshuffle his attack for one of the biggest matches of the tournament.
