Switzerland claimed first place in Group B after defeating co-hosts Canada 2-1 in the final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage. The victory ensured the Swiss advanced as group winners, while Canada also progressed after finishing second.
Bosnia and Herzegovina also had reason to celebrate after defeating Qatar 3-1, with four points proving enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
Switzerland Strike After the Break
With a draw enough for Canada to secure top spot, both teams approached the opening stages cautiously.
Neither side wanted to take unnecessary risks, resulting in a first half with few clear-cut opportunities. Switzerland came closest through Breel Embolo, who was denied in a one-on-one situation by Maxime Crepeau before Johan Manzambi's follow-up effort was blocked on the goal line.
Canada threatened sporadically through Cyle Larin and Ali Ahmed, but Gregor Kobel was rarely troubled.
The game changed dramatically after halftime.
Ruben Vargas finally broke the deadlock by finishing a well-worked attacking move, giving Switzerland the advantage they had been searching for.
Soon afterwards, the Swiss doubled their lead. Embolo turned provider with an excellent pass to Johan Manzambi, whose finish slipped past Crepeau. The goal was Manzambi's third of the tournament.
Nice Goal for Canada
Trailing by two goals, Canada increased the intensity and pushed Switzerland deeper into their own half.
Substitute Promise David reignited hopes by scoring shortly after entering the pitch, finishing off a move that began with a superb first touch from Nathan Saliba. That was lovely!
The hosts threw numbers forward during the closing minutes in search of an equalizer, but Switzerland defended resolutely to protect their narrow advantage.
The 2-1 victory confirmed the Swiss as Group B winners, while Canada progressed to the Round of 32 as runners-up.
Bosnia Also Advance
Elsewhere in the group, Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their World Cup campaign alive with a convincing 3-1 win over Qatar.
Although the victory was not enough to climb into the top two, four points proved sufficient to secure qualification as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.
Qatar, meanwhile, bowed out with just a single point from three matches. Their only positive result came in a late draw against Switzerland earlier in the group stage, but it ultimately was not enough to keep their knockout hopes alive.
Group B Final Standings
Switzerland finish top of the group after an impressive campaign, with Canada also safely through to the knockout rounds.
Bosnia and Herzegovina join them in the next stage thanks to their strong record among the third-placed teams, while Qatar's World Cup journey comes to an end.
