Switzerland continued their impressive World Cup campaign with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria, booking a place in the Round of 16 without ever looking seriously troubled. Early goals in each half proved enough for Murat Yakin's side, while Algeria were left to regret a handful of missed opportunities.
Fast Start Gives Switzerland Complete Control
There was an emotional subplot before kick-off as Vladimir Petković faced the Swiss national team he coached for seven years, hoping to mastermind a famous upset with Algeria.
Instead, Switzerland struck before Algeria had time to settle.
After an energetic run down the left flank, Johan Manzambi delivered a low cross that Breel Embolo converted from close range, giving the Swiss an early advantage and immediately putting the pressure on the North Africans.
Algeria gradually found their rhythm but lacked the finishing touch. Houssem Aouar tested Gregor Kobel from distance, while a mix-up between Aouar and Ibrahim Maza inside the penalty area wasted their best opportunity before half-time.
Defensive Mistake Ends Algeria's Hopes
Any hopes of a comeback disappeared almost instantly after the restart.
Less than a minute into the second half, Mohamed Belghali's misplaced clearance fell kindly to Dan Ndoye, who drove a powerful effort beyond Luca Zidane to double Switzerland's lead.
The goal forced Algeria to open up, creating more space for the Swiss to exploit. Although Riyad Mahrez came close to pulling one back, Denis Zakaria produced a crucial goal-line clearance to preserve the two-goal cushion.
From that point on, Switzerland comfortably managed the game, limiting Algeria to speculative efforts while remaining dangerous on the counterattack.
Swiss March On Despite Injury Concern
The scoreline could have been even more convincing had Fabian Rieder converted a late chance after finding himself in space inside the box.
Instead, Switzerland settled for a professional 2-0 victory that never truly looked in doubt.
The only concern for Murat Yakin came late in the match when Zakaria was forced off with an apparent injury, potentially creating a selection headache ahead of the next round.
Switzerland will now face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana in the Round of 16, with the South Americans widely expected to emerge as favourites from that tie.
