The Netherlands bounced back in emphatic fashion after their opening draw with Japan, producing one of the most dominant performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far. Ronald Koeman's side overwhelmed Sweden 5-1 in Houston, with Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scoring twice as Oranje moved to the top of Group F.

Dutch Response After Japan Setback

After dropping points in a 2-2 draw against Japan, the Netherlands entered the match under pressure to deliver. They responded almost immediately.

Just five minutes into the contest, Gakpo's cross found Brobbey, who finished from close range to put the Dutch ahead. The striker struck again before the 20-minute mark, sliding in to convert another dangerous delivery, this time from Denzel Dumfries.

Sweden briefly threatened through Viktor Gyokeres, but Bart Verbruggen dealt comfortably with the few chances that came his way.

The Scandinavians thought they had pulled one back shortly before halftime when Gustaf Lagerbielke found the net from a set piece. However, a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside, preserving the Dutch two-goal advantage.

Second Half Turns Into a Rout

If Sweden still had hopes of mounting a comeback, they disappeared almost immediately after the restart.

Dumfries collected his second assist of the evening as Gakpo made it 3-0 just two minutes into the second half. Before Sweden could recover, the Liverpool forward was involved again, helping create another goal as the Netherlands stretched their lead to four.

At that stage, the contest was effectively over.

Sweden did manage a response through substitute Anthony Elanga, who finished confidently after being released by Alexander Isak. The goal briefly reduced the deficit but never changed the direction of the match.

Summerville Completes the Demolition Job

The Dutch remained in complete control throughout the closing stages, limiting Sweden's attacking opportunities while continuing to look dangerous going forward.

Their dominance was rewarded once more in the 89th minute. Crysencio Summerville curled a superb effort into the net from outside the penalty area, putting the finishing touch on a comprehensive 5-1 victory.

Knockout Stage Within Reach

The result leaves the Netherlands in a commanding position at the top of Group F and on the verge of qualification for the knockout rounds.

A final group match against Tunisia now awaits Koeman's team, while Sweden face a far more stressful scenario. Following the heavy defeat, they are expected to battle Japan for the second qualification spot in what could become one of the most important matches of the group stage.

For the Dutch, however, the message was clear: after the disappointment against Japan, they are very much back on track.
