Mexico continued their outstanding run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, beating Ecuador 2-0 to secure a place in the Round of 16. Javier Aguirre's side did the damage before halftime, scoring twice in a dominant first-half display before comfortably seeing out the victory.
Mexico comfortably protected its two-goal advantage to record another clean sheet and continue its impressive World Cup campaign.
The co-hosts will now face the winner of England vs DR Congo in the Round of 16. Interestingly, Mexico has not reached a World Cup quarter-final since 1986, having been eliminated in the Round of 16 on seven separate occasions during that span.
Mexico's Beautiful Goals Before The Break
Mexico wasted little time taking control of the contest. Raúl Jiménez came close to opening the scoring inside the opening minutes after being found by Luis Romo, while 17-year-old Gilberto Mora also tested Ecuador with a fierce effort that flashed narrowly wide.
Ecuador nearly struck first against the run of play when John Yeboah forced Raúl Rangel into an excellent save, the Mexican goalkeeper pushing the ball onto the post.
That proved to be a turning point.
Moments later, Julián Quiñones raced onto a perfectly weighted through ball, held off William Pacho, and calmly slotted home to give the co-hosts the lead.

Mexico doubled its advantage before the break after a defensive disaster from Ecuador. Joel Ordóñez surrendered possession to Jiménez before slipping, allowing the striker to combine with Quiñones in a quick one-two before rifling an unstoppable finish into the top corner.
Ecuador Without Response
Sebastián Beccacece made changes after halftime in an attempt to spark a comeback, but Mexico remained firmly in control.
Ecuador's best opportunity fell to Kevin Rodríguez, who broke through after an excellent pass from Moisés Caicedo, only to drag his finish wide as Rangel closed him down brilliantly.
At the other end, Mexico continued to threaten. César Montes nearly scored from a corner before Orbelín Pineda sent a late effort just beyond the post.
Red Card Caps Frustrating Night for Ecuador
The closing stages became increasingly heated as Ecuador's frustration grew.
Both Kendry Páez and Caicedo entered the referee's notebook before defender Piero Hincapié was sent off following a VAR review after covering his mouth during a confrontation with an opponent. It was the second dismissal of that kind at this year's tournament, following Miguel Almirón's red card for Paraguay.
