Manchester United close to major Premier League transfer
Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after stepping up their efforts to reinforce the centre of midfield.
According to reports from David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano, negotiations involving Manchester United, Aston Villa and the Belgian international have reached an advanced stage. The Red Devils are understood to have activated a release clause worth approximately €41 million, equivalent to around £35 million, in the midfielder’s contract.
A verbal agreement has also reportedly been reached with Tielemans, who has identified Old Trafford as his preferred destination despite receiving interest from other clubs. The remaining formalities are now expected to focus on completing the documentation and finalising the transfer.
United have been exploring several options as part of their midfield rebuild. Andrey Santos and Atalanta’s Ederson had both been linked with moves to Manchester, but the club eventually withdrew from negotiations for the Brazilian midfielder.
ederson had been considered one of United’s leading targets, although discussions failed to produce the progress required to complete the deal. Atalanta have instead offered the player a new contract running until June 2031.
That development prompted Manchester United to intensify their pursuit of Tielemans, whose release clause provides a clearly defined route towards an agreement. His experience in English football is also viewed as a significant advantage, as he would require little time to adjust to the demands of the Premier League.
Tielemans’ contract at Villa Park is due to remain valid for another two seasons. However, the clause included in his agreement means Aston Villa would be unable to block his departure once the required fee is paid.

Tielemans brings proven Premier League experience
The 29-year-old has played in England continuously since joining Leicester City from AS Monaco in 2019. The Foxes initially signed him on loan before completing a permanent transfer worth around €45 million.
Tielemans became an influential figure at Leicester, most notably scoring the winning goal against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final. After his contract expired in 2023, he joined Aston Villa on a free transfer.
The Belgium international has since strengthened his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most reliable central midfielders. He is approaching 250 appearances in the competition, having contributed 26 goals and 39 assists.
Tielemans is capable of operating as a deeper midfielder, a number eight or in a more advanced role. His passing range, composure in possession and ability to dictate the rhythm of matches would provide United with greater control in central areas.
He also carries a threat from outside the penalty area and can contribute from free-kicks, corners and other set-piece situations.
