Two very different stories unfolded in Group E on Friday. Germany needed a dramatic late comeback to stay on course for 1. place in group, while Curacao celebrated the first World Cup point in the nation's history.
Deniz Undav emerged as the hero for Germany with two goals after coming off the bench, helping Julian Nagelsmann's side defeat Ivory Coast 2-1. Later in the day, Curacao stunned Ecuador by holding them to a scoreless draw.
Undav Turns the Game Around
Fresh from a 7-1 demolition of Curacao in their opening match, Germany arrived in Toronto hoping to take another major step toward comfortable qualification. Instead, they found themselves in serious trouble against a disciplined Ivory Coast side.
The Africans frustrated Germany throughout the first half and struck with their first real opportunity. Yan Diomande beat Joshua Kimmich on the flank before delivering a dangerous ball into the area. After Amad Diallo's initial effort was blocked, Franck Kessie reacted quickest to score from close range.
Germany enjoyed more possession and thought they had equalized on multiple occasions before the break, but both goals were ruled out following fouls in the buildup.
Ivory Coast Let Germany Off the Hook
The second half initially followed a similar pattern. Ivory Coast looked comfortable and even had opportunities to double their advantage, with Diomande wasting their best chance after finding himself in a promising position. That miss would prove costly.
As the match wore on, Germany increased the pressure and Nagelsmann's substitutions changed the momentum completely. One of those changes, Deniz Undav, found the equalizer in the 67th minute after connecting with a delivery from Nadiem Amiri.
Germany pushed relentlessly for a winner and finally found it deep into stoppage time. Felix Nmecha slipped a precise pass into the penalty area, and Undav calmly finished beyond Yahia Fofana to complete the turnaround.
The striker's brace secured a crucial three points and maintained his impressive scoring record for the national team.

Curacao Earn Historic First Point
Before Germany's dramatic victory, Curacao produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.
Just days after suffering a heavy defeat against Germany, the World Cup newcomers battled to a 0-0 draw against Ecuador and collected the first point in their World Cup history.
Goalkeeper Eloy Room was the undisputed star of the match. The experienced shot-stopper repeatedly denied Ecuador, making key saves against Enner Valencia, Gonzalo Plata, John Yeboah and Nilson Angulo.
Ecuador Waste Their Chances
Ecuador controlled large portions of the game and created enough opportunities to secure victory, but they simply could not beat Room.
Their closest effort arrived late on when Angelo Preciado struck the crossbar, leaving Ecuador frustrated and forcing them to settle for a draw.
Group E Wide Open Ahead of Final Round
Germany now sit top of Group E with four points after two matches. However, qualification remains far from decided.
Ivory Coast remain firmly in contention despite the defeat, while Ecuador and Curacao are still alive heading into the final round of fixtures.
With every team retaining a chance of reaching the knockout stage, Group E is shaping up to be one of the most competitive groups at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
