Portugal silenced their critics in emphatic fashion on Tuesday, cruising to a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Group K of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. After a disappointing draw against DR Congo in their opening match, Roberto Martinez's side delivered the response supporters had been waiting for.
The night belonged to Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored twice and achieved a historic milestone that no player had managed before.
Ronaldo Reaches Another Unmatched Record
Portugal needed only six minutes to take control of the match.
Cristiano Ronaldo timed his run perfectly and finished clinically at the near post to give the Europeans an early advantage. It was exactly the start Portugal wanted after the criticism that followed their opening fixture.
The veteran forward struck again before halftime, finishing off a precise through ball from Bruno Fernandes to make it 3-0. Between Ronaldo's two goals, Nuno Mendes had also found the net with a superb free-kick.
The second goal carried extra significance. Ronaldo became the first player in football history to score at six different FIFA World Cup tournaments, adding yet another record to an extraordinary career.
Portugal Look Much Sharper
While Ronaldo grabbed the headlines, Portugal's overall performance was arguably the biggest positive.
The team moved the ball with far greater speed and confidence than it had against DR Congo, creating chances almost at will. Bruno Fernandes orchestrated much of the attacking play, while the full-backs repeatedly caused problems for the Uzbek defense.
For long stretches, Uzbekistan simply could not cope with the movement and quality of their opponents.
The Asian side rarely threatened despite entering the match with hopes of causing an upset. Their brightest moment came when Aziz Ganiev unleashed a spectacular strike from distance, only for the goal to be disallowed. Beyond that, clear opportunities were difficult to find.
Portugal continued to dominate after the break, although the pace of the game naturally slowed as the result became increasingly secure.
Ronaldo pushed for a hat-trick and came close on several occasions, but goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov prevented the scoreline from becoming even more lopsided.
Late Goals Complete the Rout
The final stages brought two more goals for Portugal.
First came a bizarre own goal following a misunderstanding between goalkeeper Abduvokhid Nematov and defender Abduqodir Khusanov, a moment that summed up Uzbekistan's difficult evening.
Substitute Rafael Leao then provided the finishing touch. The AC Milan winger capped an impressive cameo by firing a precise effort into the top corner, completing a comprehensive 5-0 win.
Portugal Back on Track
The result dramatically improves Portugal's position in Group K and places the 2016 European champions in a strong position to reach the knockout stage.
More importantly, it restores confidence after an underwhelming start to the tournament and serves as a reminder of the quality within Martinez's squad.
And while Portugal celebrated a crucial victory, the night will be remembered above all for Ronaldo's latest record — another landmark achievement for one of football's greatest players.
