Canada became the first team to book a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after edging South Africa 1-0 in dramatic fashion. With extra time only moments away, Stephen Eustaquio produced a decisive strike in stoppage time to seal a historic victory for the tournament co-hosts.
Stoppage-Time Heroics Break South African Resistance
For much of the evening, it looked as though neither side would find a breakthrough. Canada controlled possession and gradually increased the pressure, but South Africa defended resolutely and kept the hosts at bay.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 92nd minute. Eustaquio unleashed a low effort from outside the box that found its way through a crowd of players and beyond Ronwen Williams, sparking wild celebrations inside the stadium.
It was the only goal of a tense knockout clash and enough to send Jesse Marsch's side into the last 16.
Few Chances Before the Break
The opening half offered little attacking quality from either team. Both sides approached the match cautiously, knowing that a single mistake could end their World Cup campaign.
Canada's best opportunity arrived when Derek Cornelius headed goalwards from an Eustaquio free-kick, but Williams reacted comfortably. Just before halftime, Moïse Bombito came even closer, only to see his effort cleared off the line by a South African defender.
The goalless first half frustrated the home crowd, who made their feelings known as the players headed to the dressing rooms.
Canada Make World Cup History
The introduction of Alphonso Davies after the interval gave Canada additional energy, while Tani Oluwaseyi and Jonathan David both came close to breaking the deadlock before Eustaquio's late intervention.
