Canada delivered one of the most convincing performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, dismantling Qatar 6-0 in their second Group B match. The co-hosts moved a step closer to the knockout stage, although celebrations were tempered by a serious injury suffered by midfielder Ismael Kone.

Hosts Take Control Early

After both teams opened their campaigns with draws, Canada wasted no time asserting their superiority. Jesse Marsch’s side dominated possession from the outset and pinned Qatar deep inside their own half.

The breakthrough arrived in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin reacted quickest to convert a rebound after Jonathan David’s effort was saved. David then doubled the advantage less than ten minutes later, putting Canada firmly in command.

Qatar’s task became even harder when Homam Al Amin was sent off for bringing down Tajon Buchanan as the Canadian winger raced clear on goal. Down to ten men, the visitors struggled to contain the relentless pressure.

Before halftime, David struck again to make it 3-0 and leave Canada in complete control.

Serious Blow for Canada

The biggest talking point of the second half came shortly after the restart. Assim Madibo produced a reckless challenge on Ismael Kone, leaving the Canadian midfielder requiring treatment before being carried off on a stretcher with his leg immobilized.

Madibo received a straight red card, reducing Qatar to nine players. Early reports suggest Kone may have suffered a significant fracture, though the extent of the injury has yet to be officially confirmed.

Canada responded by dedicating their next goal to their injured teammate. Substitute Nathan-Dylan Saliba, who replaced Kone, found the net and later displayed Kone’s shirt in a show of support.

David Completes Hat-Trick as Canada Run Riot

With a two-man advantage, Canada continued to create chances at will. Saliba added another goal from a well-taken free kick before Mohamed Al Mannai inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.

Jonathan David then completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, sealing a remarkable 6-0 victory.

David now is one of the leaders in World Cup's top scorers list.

Group B Picture

Canada entered the match needing a victory after drawing with Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening fixture. The emphatic result significantly boosts their hopes of reaching the Round of 16 and sends a warning to the rest of the competition.

The only concern for the hosts is the condition of Kone, whose injury could prove a major setback if the worst fears are confirmed.

Earlier in the day, Switzerland strengthened its position in Group B with a convincing 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
