Belgium looked dead and buried. Trailing 2-0 with only a few minutes left, the Red Devils appeared destined for an early World Cup exit. Instead, they produced one of the wildest turnarounds of the tournament, forcing extra time before edging Senegal 3-2 thanks to Youri Tielemans' extra-time penalty.
The victory sends Belgium into the Round of 16, where the United States awaits.
Senegal Controlled the Match for More Than 80 Minutes
For most of the evening, there was only one team playing with confidence.
Senegal dictated the tempo, won the midfield battle and repeatedly exposed Belgium's shaky defence. Their pressure was rewarded midway through the first half when Habib Diarra reacted quickest after Ismaïla Sarr's header came back off the post, firing home from close range.
The Africans looked even more comfortable after halftime.
A perfectly weighted pass from Moussa Niakhaté released Sarr behind the Belgian back line, and the winger finished emphatically beyond Thibaut Courtois to double Senegal's advantage. At 2-0, Belgium looked completely out of ideas.
Three Minutes Changed Everything
Then the match turned on its head.
With time running out, Romelu Lukaku gave Belgium hope by converting a cross from Thomas Meunier, cutting the deficit in half.
Before Senegal had time to recover, the equaliser arrived.
A dangerous delivery from Leandro Trossard caused confusion in the penalty area, goalkeeper Mory Diaw misjudged the cross, and Tielemans rose highest to head into the empty net.
The goal carried extra drama.
Earlier in the second half, Trossard and Tielemans had been involved in a heated argument during a cooling break and had to be separated by teammates. Less than half an hour later, the same two players combined for the goal that rescued Belgium's World Cup.
Tielemans Completes the Miracle
Momentum had completely shifted once extra time began.
Belgium suddenly looked like the fresher side, while Senegal struggled physically after dominating for so long.
The decisive moment came when Lamine Camara brought down Tielemans inside the area. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot despite furious protests from the Senegalese players.
Tielemans stepped up himself and confidently buried the penalty into the top corner, completing an extraordinary comeback that seemed impossible only minutes earlier.
Belgium now advances to face the United States in the Round of 16, while Senegal leaves the tournament wondering how a place in the next round slipped away after holding complete control for more than 80 minutes.
