Alejandro Grimaldo is preparing to leave Bayer Leverkusen after three highly productive seasons in Germany. The Spanish full-back is now on the verge of completing a move that has already received Fabrizio Romano’s “here we go” confirmation.

Grimaldo close to Atletico Madrid transfer

Alejandro Grimaldo is set to become a new Atletico Madrid player. According to Fabrizio Romano, all parties have reached a full verbal agreement, meaning the transfer is now at the final stage.

The deal still requires medical tests and the signing of documents, but the main conditions have already been settled. Bayer Leverkusen are expected to receive more than €20 million, including bonuses.

The fee is influenced by Grimaldo’s contract situation. His current deal with Leverkusen runs for only one more year, which limited the German club’s negotiating position despite the player’s importance to the team.

Leverkusen make major profit after free transfer

Grimaldo joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 from Benfica on a free transfer. From a sporting and financial perspective, that move turned out to be an outstanding piece of business.

During his time in Germany, the 30-year-old made 145 appearances, scoring 30 goals and providing 45 assists. Those numbers are exceptional for a left-sided defender and show how important he became in Leverkusen’s attacking structure.

His first season was particularly successful. Grimaldo helped Bayer win a historic Bundesliga title and reach the Europa League final, becoming one of the key figures in Xabi Alonso’s system.

For Atletico, the transfer brings experience, technical quality and proven output from the left flank. Grimaldo is currently focused on the World Cup with Spain, although he has not played in either of their first two matches. Spain will face Uruguay in their final group-stage game.
