Scotland’s disappointing World Cup campaign has brought a major change. Steve Clarke has resigned as head coach after the national team failed to progress beyond the group stage.
Clarke leaves after seven years in charge
Steve Clarke is no longer the head coach of Scotland. The Scottish FA confirmed his resignation after the team’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
Scotland competed in Group C and collected only three points from three matches. Their only victory came against Haiti, while defeats to Brazil and Morocco left them short of qualification for the round of 32.
The final standings and goal record were not enough to extend Scotland’s stay at the tournament. Once the group stage ended, Clarke decided to step down.

Scotland face search for a successor
Clarke had been in charge since May 2019. During his seven-year spell, he led Scotland in 81 matches, recording 38 wins, 14 draws and 29 defeats.
The federation described him as the most successful manager in the history of the men’s national team, underlining the scale of his work despite the poor ending at the World Cup.
His departure closes an important era for Scotland. The next coach will inherit a squad that reached a major tournament but failed to turn that presence into a knockout-stage run.
