Stefan de Vrij appears ready to begin a completely new chapter in his career. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the experienced Dutch defender is close to joining Panathinaikos on a free transfer once his contract with Inter Milan expires.

If the deal is completed, it will be the first time the centre-back has played outside the Netherlands and Italy.

Panathinaikos Closing In

Negotiations between Panathinaikos and De Vrij are believed to be in their final stages.

Romano reports that the two parties have already agreed on almost every aspect of the contract, with only the player's final approval still required before the transfer can be completed.

The Greek club sees the veteran defender as one of its marquee additions ahead of the 2026/27 campaign after a disappointing domestic season that ended with a fourth-place finish.

End of a Successful Inter Career

De Vrij's departure will bring an end to seven memorable years at Inter Milan.

Since arriving from Lazio in 2018, the Dutch international established himself as one of Serie A's most dependable defenders, helping Inter collect three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies and four Italian Super Cups.

Last season, however, his role became increasingly limited. The 34-year-old struggled for regular playing time, making fewer starts as younger options moved ahead of him in the defensive rotation.

With his contract expiring at the end of June, both sides have decided not to continue the partnership.

Twelve Years in Italian Football

Leaving Inter also closes the curtain on De Vrij's lengthy stay in Italian football.

Before moving to Milan, he spent four seasons at Lazio, where he made 118 appearances and established himself as one of the league's top central defenders.

Combined with his time at Inter, the Dutchman spent 12 years competing in Serie A, becoming one of the most consistent foreign defenders of his generation.

Experienced Leader

Before arriving in Italy, De Vrij came through the academy at Feyenoord, making 154 senior appearances for the Rotterdam club.

He has also earned 79 caps for the Netherlands and brings a wealth of international and European experience to what could become one of the most eye-catching transfers in the Greek league this summer.

Should the final details be completed as expected, Panathinaikos will add not only an accomplished defender but also a proven leader as the club looks to return to the top of Greek football.
