Chelsea are on the verge of completing their first major transfer since appointing Xabi Alonso as head coach. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Premier League club has reached an agreement to sign highly rated Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

The deal is expected to be worth more than €55 million, including performance-related bonuses.

Blues Beat Inter to Rising Italian Talent

Palestra has emerged as one of the most sought-after young full-backs in Italian football.

The 21-year-old, a product of Atalanta's academy, spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Cagliari, where he established himself as a regular starter in Serie A. Across 37 appearances, he contributed one goal and four assists while continuing his rapid development.

His performances attracted interest from several clubs, most notably Inter Milan, who had reportedly identified him as a potential long-term replacement for Denzel Dumfries.

Despite that interest, Chelsea ultimately won the race for his signature.

Reports indicate that an agreement between Chelsea and Atalanta has already been finalized, leaving only the final formalities before the transfer becomes official.

A key factor in the negotiations was Xabi Alonso's direct involvement. The former Bayer Leverkusen manager is said to have personally outlined his plans for the squad and convinced Palestra that Stamford Bridge was the ideal destination for the next stage of his career.

The transfer will mark the first arrival of the Alonso era as Chelsea begin shaping their squad for the 2026/27 campaign.

Chelsea Building for the Future

Chelsea's recruitment strategy continues to focus on acquiring young players with significant long-term potential, and Palestra fits that profile perfectly.

The Italian defender is expected to provide competition and depth on the right side of defense while also developing into a key figure for the club in the coming years.

With a transfer fee exceeding €55 million, Chelsea clearly view him as much more than a squad player.

Premier League Opener Approaching

The Blues will begin their Premier League season on August 24 with a London derby against Fulham.

Club officials hope Palestra's arrival will be the first of several important additions as Chelsea attempt to re-establish themselves among England's elite and compete for major trophies under their new manager.

If all remaining paperwork proceeds as expected, the Italian youngster could soon become the first new face of the Xabi Alonso project at Stamford Bridge.
