Turkey's hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stage are officially over after a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay in Group D. The result leaves Vincenzo Montella's side without a single point after two matches, while Paraguay moved into a strong position ahead of the final round.
The game will also be remembered for producing one of the tournament's most unusual moments: the first red card issued under FIFA's newly introduced conduct regulations.
Nightmare Start Seals Turkey's Fate
Turkey could hardly have imagined a worse beginning.
Just 65 seconds after kickoff, Matias Galarza unleashed a long-range effort that found its way past the Turkish defense and into the net. The early goal immediately handed Paraguay the advantage and forced Turkey into chase mode for virtually the entire match.
Despite enjoying more possession, the Europeans struggled to create clear opportunities. Their best first-half chance came from a set piece when Mert Muldur struck the woodwork, but Paraguay survived the scare and maintained its lead heading into halftime.
New FIFA Rule Produces Tournament First
The biggest talking point arrived moments before the break.
Following an exchange between players, Miguel Almiron was seen directing comments toward Muldur while attempting to conceal his words. After a VAR review, the referee decided the incident violated FIFA's recently introduced regulations and showed the Paraguayan star a straight red card.
It marked the first dismissal of the tournament under the new rules and immediately became one of the most discussed moments of the World Cup so far.
Paraguay Hold Firm With Ten Men
Playing an entire half with a numerical advantage seemed like the perfect opportunity for Turkey to rescue their campaign.
Instead, Paraguay delivered a disciplined defensive performance. The South Americans dropped deeper, protected their penalty area effectively and limited Turkey to only a handful of genuine scoring chances.
Orlando Gill produced a crucial save shortly after halftime when a deflected effort appeared destined for the corner of the net. Muldur later threatened again from another dead-ball situation but failed to hit the target.

As the clock ticked down, Turkey resorted to repeatedly sending crosses into the box, yet the equalizer never arrived.
USA Take Control of Group D
Earlier in the group's other match, the United States defeated Australia 2-0 to remain perfect through two games.
The Americans moved ahead in the 11th minute thanks to an own goal from Cameron Burgess. Alexander Freeman added a second just before halftime, with VAR confirming the strike after a lengthy review.
Australia improved after the break but could not break through the U.S. defense.
With six points from two matches, Mauricio Pochettino's side now sit comfortably at the top of Group D and are closing in on qualification for the knockout rounds.
Turkey, meanwhile, will enter their final group match against the United States with nothing left to play for except pride.
