Tottenham Hotspur have completed their biggest signing of the summer so far, securing the services of Dutch international Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton & Hove Albion. The move marks the club's third addition of the transfer window and underlines its determination to avoid another difficult Premier League campaign.
Spurs Step Up Spending
After surviving a turbulent 2025/26 season, Tottenham have wasted little time reshaping the squad. The arrival of Roberto De Zerbi late in the previous campaign helped the club steer clear of relegation trouble, but the alarming season exposed several weaknesses that needed addressing.
Free-agent signings Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson were the first pieces of the rebuild. Van Hecke now becomes the first player to arrive for a significant transfer fee.
Familiar Face for De Zerbi
The 25-year-old centre-back joins Tottenham in a deal worth £52 million, with Brighton reportedly securing a 20 percent sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
For De Zerbi, the transfer is about more than just strengthening the defense. The Italian coach knows Van Hecke well from their time together at Brighton, where the defender developed into one of the club's most reliable performers.
Their previous working relationship is believed to have played an important role in Tottenham's pursuit of the Dutchman.
Proven Premier League Experience
Van Hecke leaves Brighton after establishing himself as a key figure at the club. During his time with the Seagulls, he made 131 appearances in all competitions, contributing four goals and six assists despite operating primarily as a defender.
His consistency in the Premier League also helped him earn regular opportunities with the Netherlands national team, where he is currently part of the squad competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
A Statement of Intent
Tottenham's latest move sends a clear message about the club's ambitions heading into the new season. Rather than simply aiming to avoid another relegation battle, Spurs are looking to build a squad capable of challenging much higher up the table.
Van Hecke is expected to become a cornerstone of that project, bringing leadership, top-flight experience and familiarity with De Zerbi's tactical approach.
With three arrivals already confirmed, Tottenham's summer business may be far from finished.
